In the past twenty years egg freezing has been offered as an option to preserve fertility for women who are diagnosed with cancer and are about to undergo chemotherapy that might affect their fertility. This is called ‘onco fertility preservation’ (OFP). Advances in egg freezing techniques in the last ten years have improved the chance of having a baby from frozen eggs. As a result, more and more women around the world now turn to egg freezing for non-medical reasons to guard against age-related fertility decline. This is called elective fertility preservation (EFP).

Heterosexual couples comprised only 15 per cent of families formed as a result of donor conception in Victoria between 2014-15, according to the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority’s (VARTA’s) Annual Report 2015, released today.

‘Donor conception: towards openness’ committee wins Minister for Health Volunteer Awards VARTA is delighted that one of its nominations for the Victorian Minister for Health Volunteer Awards was announced a winner at the award’s ceremony on 18 May. The award for ‘Outstanding achievement by a volunteer: innovation award’ was presented to the volunteer committee who put together the Donor conception: towards openness exhibition in June 2015.

That’s the conclusion of a large study looking at the timing of smoking cessation and the risk of low birth weight or LBW (weighing less than 2.5kg).
