"My first child is five and a half now and my second child is 20 months. It wasn’t “so Mum who’s my Dad” type of question. It was “other kids have Dads where’s mine? So it was up to me to say that she did have a Dad and explain to her that he didn’t live with us".
Despite having their sons in the secretive era of donor conception in the1980’s, Kerry and her husband Greg had concerns that their story would come out later and so chose to be very open with their sons and their extended family from the start. They are so glad they did as a recent medical diagnosis requiring a bone marrow transplant would have revealed the secret at a very traumatic time.
The History of Donor Conception Records in Victoria was prepared for VARTA by Dr Fiona Kelly, Associate Professor in Law at La Trobe University, and Dr Deborah Dempsey, Associate Professor in Sociology at Swinburne University of Technology. The report was supported by the Victorian Government.
VARTA is excited to announce that its 'Donor conception: towards openness' exhibition, held at Melbourne's City Library Gallery in June, has now been permanently housed on the VARTA website.
Just as the original exhibition was the first of its kind, so too is this online gallery – a unique collection of art, photography, writing, artefacts and memorabilia provided by people whose lives have been touched by donor conception.
New regulations made under the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008, the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Regulations 2019 (the new regulations), start on December 13, 2019, and replace the earlier regulations which will no longer operate.
