What Can Families Find Out About Me?
As a donor, information about you, will be provided by the treating clinic to a Central Register maintained by the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. People conceived as a result of your donation are entitled to apply for identifying information about you (i.e. your name, date of birth, and address) when they are at least 18 years of age. You will be notified prior to this occurring.
The parents of children conceived from your donation can also apply on their child’s behalf if they want information/contact about you prior to this. You do not have to agree to this if you do not want to.
More and more families are in contact with their donor. This may range from the family who want to send a thank you letter, to ask for more medical information or other information including photos as they may want to write a ‘life diary’ for their child or to correspond occasionally by mail or email. In time, if everyone feels comfortable, this might progress to telephone contact and/or meeting. For this contact to work good will, respect, clarity about role and honesty are essential.
