Considering Treatment Abroad?
People consider having assisted reproductive treatment overseas for a variety of reasons. They may be moving overseas or may be considering treatment options that are not available in Australia.
Regulation of assisted reproductive treatment in other countries varies. Some countries have quite strict laws while others have no laws. If you are considering treatment abroad, it may be helpful to investigate the relevant laws and regulations in the country of your choice.
If you have eggs, sperm or embryos in storage in Victoria and wish to move them overseas, you will need to contact the clinic where your eggs, sperm or embryos are stored to arrange transport to another country.
If you would like to export donor eggs, donor sperm or embryos formed from donor eggs or sperm, you will need to apply to the Authority for approval to export to another country. When considering an application for export of donor eggs, donor sperm or embryos formed from donor eggs or sperm, the Authority must have regard to whether the purpose for and way in which the eggs, sperm or embryos will be used overseas is consistent with the way in which they could be used in Victoria.
Further details on import and export of eggs, sperm and embryos can be found in the Import/Export of Gametes and Embryos section of this website.
You may want to ask questions of an overseas treating clinic before making a decision. For further information on what questions to ask refer to the Patient & Physican Prompter.
